Beep, Beep . . . Take Your Medicine

I caught this tidbit in the St. Louis Business Journal regarding Express Script’s experimentation with a “talking”, well not really talking, pill bottle that reminds people to take their drugs with flashing LED lights and “beeps” that increase in volume as time passes and the drug isn’t taken.  The bottle will not only remind you when to take your medicine, it can actually monitor when you took it, and then report back to the PBM. Right now, the bottle isn’t cheap, and Express Scripts is just piloting it, but as the representative from Express Scripts notes in the article, noncompliance of drug adherence costs the nation $100 billion in hospital admissions every year.   That’s a lot of beeping.
